A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a volunteer group of patients, carers, and practice staff who meet regularly to discuss and improve their GP surgery’s services, ensuring the patient’s perspective is heard in decisions about the practice’s running and development for the benefit of the whole community. These groups act as a link between patients and their surgery, helping to make healthcare work better for everyone.

Key functions of a PPG:
Feedback
Providing valuable patient feedback on services, facilities, and communication.
Improvement
Collaborating on ideas to enhance the patient experience, such as booking appointments or access to services.
Information
Helping to disseminate important health information to the wider patient population.
Community voice
Representing the diverse needs and views of the local community within the practice.
Who’s involved?
Volunteer patients and carers, Practice Manager, and One or more General Practitioners (GPs).
Why they matter
PPGs are a key part of the NHS contract, ensuring that practices are accountable to their patients and fostering a partnership approach to local healthcare delivery.
